Until about a year ago we held communion about 4 times a year. Those were special times but they were far and few between. One day the suggestion came to make it available at every service. I felt it was a good idea but was it really a God idea? We decided to try it during the worship service. We encouraged our congregants as the Holy Spirit lead, to get up, go to the communion table and serve themselves and their family the Lord's supper.
At first most people were reluctant to move. Personally, I would wait until what I thought was an appropriate time during the worship service, I would gather my family and slip over to the table and partake of the cup and bread. Others would follow but it was always a small number. One Sunday morning before church, I was asking the Lord about this practice of offering communion every Sunday. I was still wondering if it was a God idea or just a good idea. That morning the Lord led me to my trusty Webster s Dictionary were He had me look up the word communion. It states "to converse together intimately: to have spiritual intercourse"
Then I heard the Lord say " I am inviting my people into an intimate relationship with me. By taking communion weekly, I am reminding them of the depth of this relationship, the cost of the relationship, and the median which makes this relationship possible. The broken body and the shed blood of my Son, Jesus Christ. I want My people to be reminded that the invitation to fellowship with Me is daily. 'As often as you drink it in remembrance of Me'".
That Sunday morning I shared with the fellowship what the Lord had showed me about the Lord's Supper. Many responded and continue to do so presently. It has become a treasured time in the life of our fellowship. I thank God for His leadings that calls us to converse intimately with Him.
